David Henderson-Howat – Chairperson

  • A graduate of Edinburgh University’s Department of Forestry and Natural Resources,
  • David spent most of his working life with the Forestry Commission - mainly in Scotland, where he was the Commission’s Deputy Director until he retired in 2013
  • Former head of the Scottish Government’s Agricultural and Rural Development Division and has, at different times, served on the Boards of the Central Scotland Forest Trust and the Central Scotland Green Network
  • Early career included work in Thetford Forest; managed a pine and eucalyptus forest in Swaziland; and was Forest District Manager in Aberfoyle
  • Currently President of the Institute of Chartered Foresters, and undertakes consultancy work for the United Nations Forum on Forests and FAO

Steve Luker, Glasgow (Economic)

  • Managing Director of Steve Luker Associates Ltd which was established in 2004 and provides independent consulting services associated with renewable energy technologies, biomass heat and CHP, wood fuels and sustainable development
  • In 2009 was appointed as the Mid Scotland regional forest industries cluster facilitator

Tim Hall, Edinburgh (Environmental)

  • Chartered Forester
  • A strong interest and over 20 years experience in urban forestry. Have presented at a number of national and international urban forestry conferences
  • Head of Operations, Woodland Trust Scotland, with an overview of management of all Woodland Trust sites in Scotland and policy formulation on forestry matters

Meriel Young, Edinburgh (Social)

  • Freelance consultant in urban forestry development (site design, user experience and infrastructure) and outdoor destination marketing
  • Chartered Marketer and BA in Recreation Management
  • Previous ministerial appointed board member of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority, 2002-2010
  • Wide experience in land use planning policy, corporate strategy, community planning and social regeneration, health promotion, sustainable transport and environmental education

Dr Stephen Garvin (Economic)

  • Coordinator of 4.5 million European(FP7) project on Flood Resilience-SMARTeST(2010 to 2013)
  • Member of the Building Standards Advisory committee 2005-2010 (public appointment by Scottish Government) and convenor of working Group on Environment and Safety for changes to regulations in 2010 and 2013

Mark Hamilton, West Lothian (Environmental)

  • Proprietor of Mark Hamilton Landscape Services, which has undertaken numerous woodland management and woodland design projects within Central Scotland, for a wide range of public, private, and third sector clients
  • Thirty years of experience in multiple purpose, forestry related projects, including employment with Central Scotland Countryside Trust and the Wise Group, as well as almost 20 years with MHLS

Alan Motion (Environmental)

  • Director, Alan Motion Tree Consulting Ltd, specialising in arboriculture and urban forestry consultancy throughout the UK, based in Stirlingshire
  • A graduate of Aberdeen University Department of Forestry, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters, Professional Member of the Arboricultural Association and a Chartered Environmentalist

Douglas Worrall (Social)

  • Graduate of Edinburgh University (BSc hons, Forestry) and Chartered Forester (MICFor)
  • Employee of Central Scotland Green Network Trust (and predecessor body, Central Scotland Forest Trust) 1998 to present. Various roles including Project Manager, Estates Manager, Woodland Creation Manager and now Head of Delivery. Primarily involved in community and urban woodland creation and management. Overall responsibility for delivery of programme of project work and for management of land holdings (including purchase, sale and development)
