Light up the woodlands this weekend for Diwali

Forestry Commission Scotland is inviting members of the local community and faith groups to join the Diwali Festival of Light event at Dams to Darnley Country Park this Saturday (10th November).

With support from the Dams to Darnley rangers service and East Renfrewshire Council, the woodland event will offer Hindu, Sikh and other ethnic minority groups an opportunity to celebrate their faith whilst experiencing Scottish woodlands and the benefits they bring.

During the event, there will be fire performances, lantern workshops, storytelling and Diwali snacks available. Attendees can make their own lantern and head out for a walk around the beech woodlands as the sun sets, celebrating light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.

Romena Huq, engagement officer at Forestry Commission Scotland, said: “There is a diverse range of faith groups living in Glasgow and we want to engage with these people and encourage them to learn more about their culture, make use of their local woodlands and enjoy what we all share in common - the beauty of nature.

“Social inclusion is an important goal for us and in addition to inviting guests from the faith communities, we’re also reaching out to people with disabilities, after-school clubs and families, who may never have had access to the woodlands or this kind of event. In doing this, we hope to reduce barriers to future use of Scotland’s accessible woodlands.”

Diwali is a festival connected with Hindu and Sikh cosmology, occurring between mid-October and early November beginning on the new moon. It marks the end of the harvest season in many parts of India and is universally celebrated as representing triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. Forestry Commission Scotland has supported Diwali-themed woodland events since 2011.

Attendees are encouraged to wear warm suitable clothing. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be available. For further information, please contact Romena Huq from Forestry Commission Scotland on 07917 504981.
