Laggan Rural Skills Day

Ever fancied trying your hand at some rural skills? Then head along to the Laggan Wolftrax on 11 May (10am until 2pm) and try your hand at a wide range of FREE activities.

Run as part of the Cairngorm Nature Big Weekend, the event is being led by Forest Enterprise Scotland with support from Laggan Forest Trust, the UHI School of Forestry and by members of the local community.

As well as forestry machinery demonstrations and sessions on deer management, red squirrels and wildcats, you can try your hand at den building and bush-craft. You could even pick up a few mountain biking skills or learn the basics of green woodworking.

Lucy Ford, Recreation Ranger with the FES team in Inverness, Ross & Skye, said;

“This is going to be a great day out with loads of fun activities for people of all ages.

“Seeing as this is the Year of Young People, we’re especially keen to get young people along to meet and talk to some of the people who work in the Cairngorms National Park.

“As well as getting a detailed insight into all of the work that goes into looking after the Park, some visitors on the day might get some ideas for future careers. We’ve already got over 150 pupils coming from local schools but we’re always happy to welcome more on the day.

“There will be a bit of listening but there will also be lots of hands-on stuff to do So it’s sure to be a great day.”

The skills day is part of a wider, weekend-long programme (11–13 May) of over 60 activities -delivered by estate managers, rangers, community nature groups and local businesses – that aim to get people from all backgrounds out and up close to Cairngorms Nature.

The Laggan Wolftrax site will be specially signposted for the event to make all the activities – as well as the café and the toilets – easy to find.
