Our ten Forest Districts manage the National Forest Estate. They’re responsible for harvesting trees and planting new ones, but they are also at the sharp end of wildlife, environment and heritage conservation – and provide the paths and facilities that help you get the most from your forests.

If you have a query about our work on the National Forest Estate, our facilities, community and education projects, conservation or volunteering, please contact your local Forest District office:

How we are structured

Ten Forest Districts manage and maintain the woodland on the National Forest Estate. Their work includes planting, forest design, harvesting, marketing timber, conservation, working with local communities and organisations, and providing facilities and access for the public.

The Forest Districts receive direction from our Management Board, who monitor performance against agreed policies, strategies and targets.

How we manage our forests

The strategy for managing the estate is set out in our Strategic Plan 2013-16. A new Strategic Plan is currently being prepared, to help further develop the multi-purpose role of the estate for years to come.

Forest Enterprise Scotland's priorities for the National Forest Estate are published in the annual Corporate Plan.

Open Data Policy

FES supports the Scottish Government’s Open Data Strategy. Our Open Data Publication Plan (PDF 1MB) lets other people make use of some of the data we hold. This helps people to understand how we work and offers opportunities to use the data in new ways to create social and economic benefits.

Scotland's National Forest Estate is managed by Forest Enterprise Scotland (FES), an agency of FCS. Forest Enterprise Scotland's Management Board (FESMB) gives strategic direction and leadership to the Scottish Forest Districts.
