Storm damage at Callander Crags
Background to the clearance works
Since an extreme weather event in December 2013, Forestry Enterprise Scotland have been working through a programme of works to clear the resulting storm damaged trees at Callander Crags.
In 2015 a short section of approx 250m of the tree clearance works, located directly on top of the Crags was completed by specialist rope and winch access.
Later machine works took place to clear most of the windblown trees on the east of the site. Essential path repairs were then carried out, letting us re-open this section of the main path.
Due to the difficult site access it has not been possible to remove the remaining trees by machine. The decision was taken to bring in a specialist Arboricultural contractor to cut and clear by hand the remaining windblown trees directly beside to the path on the west ridge of the Crags. This work has now been completed and the full trail loop re-opened.
Current situation
We would like to apologise for the time it has taken to re-open this section of the path. It has not been easy due to the complex nature of the storm damage and site access.
At present it has been necessary to leave the timber on site as we look at the management options for site access.
