Mature Scots pines surround the younger spruce trees in this working forest, with scatterings of rowan, birch and willow. There’s even an old beech hedge: a clue that there’s been woodland here for quite a while. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place with plenty of woodland birds to spot.
There are no waymarked trails, but there’s a good network of mostly level forest roads, tracks and paths. The paths and tracks are uneven and muddy in places.
Car parking
There is no formal car park, but there is room for a few cars in the forest entrance. Please leave the road clear for large vehicles to get in and out.

There are places to eat in Kirknewton, Livingston or Balerno. The nearest public toilets are in Livingston.
How to get here
The forest entrance is off Leyden Road, near Kirknewton. Coming from Livingston, take the A71 towards Edinburgh and then turn right onto Station Road, signposted for Kirknewton. After about ¼ mile (400 metres), Leyden Road is an un-signposted turning on the right. Follow the road south for just over 1 mile (1.6 km) to the forest entrance at grid reference NT 100 652.
Remember this is a working forest: please park so vehicles can get in about out of forest road.
