Enjoy the view at Glen Lochy

Just a little distance from the bustle of Tyndrum is this quiet riverside picnic site. There's plenty of room to stretch your legs in fresh mountain air and dip a toe in the waters of the River Lochy.

Wide open views sweep from the picnic site across Ben Lui, a wonderful Munro. You can climb it, together with Beinn a' Chleibh, from the other side of the river.

Reach for the summit

You'll get a fine view of Ben Lui from here, especially of the steep north west ridge and the mountain's impressive high corries where snow lies from autumn until early summer.

The classic route to the summit is from Dalrigh, but the simplest and shortest route at just under 2 miles (3 km) starts from this car park. There's no bridge over the river so you will need to cross on foot, taking great care when the river is in spate, and follow the unmarked path under the railway and through the forest to open hill land below Ben Lui.

Walk Highlands has a useful description of the walk up Ben Lui that describes the route in detail. It's muddy, steep and there are burns to cross - be prepared for wet feet and mountain conditions.

How to get here

From Tyndrum, head towards Oban on the A85 for 6 ¾ miles (10.8 km) and you'll see Glen Lochy car park signposted on your left.

From Dalmally, take the A85 east towards Tyndrum for 4 ¾ miles (7.6 km). The car park is signposted on your right.

Travelling from Tyndrum, the nearest postcode is FK20 8SB. This is at Arrivain, about 2 ¾ miles (4.4 km) before the car park.

Public transport

The Glasgow to Oban bus service passes the car park entrance although the nearest bus stop is in Dalmally, 4 ¾ miles (7.6 km) away. There's also a train station in Dalmally. See Traveline Scotland for timetables.

Nearby places

There are nearby picnic sites at Strone Hill, which has some delightful short trails, and just around the corner in Glen Orchy. Towards Oban there are forest walks and trails through natural sessile oakwoods in Glen Nant National Nature Reserve. The West Highland Way runs nearby and the immensely photogenic Kilchurn Castle, at the head of Loch Awe, is definitely worth a view.
