Where do I start?

With a clear future vision you'll put the right tree in the right place, increasing the value of your woodland.

Knowing what to plant

Before you start your application, it's important to think about what you want from your woodland. Is it for:

  • habitat improvement?
  • sporting use?
  • woodfuel?

Knowing your soil and climate type should also be considered when choosing the best trees to plant.

Think about harvesting

It's a good idea to think about how you'll access and extract your timber. Wood that's tricky to harvest will reduce your profits through increased costs, so you may wish to consider:

  • are the trees accessible? (is the ground on a slope?)
  • will your neighbours be affected?
  • are there fences, powerlines or waterways in the way?

You will need to detail all of this information on your application. Remember: having a clear vision for your woodland from the outset will maximise your return.
