Control grey squirrels
Scottish Natural Heritage carried out a consultation in 2009 on a grey squirrel control strategy to support red squirrel conservation. It found broad support for targeted grey squirrel control where there are clear benefits to red squirrels.
Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels
Widespread grey squirrel control needs effective regional co-ordination and we encourage this by supporting the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels Project.
Regular reviews monitor the long-term success of grey squirrel control to conserve red squirrels.
We also support their programme of monitoring squirrelpox outbreaks and their attempts to prevent the disease spreading into red squirrel populations.
Grant support for grey squirrel control
There is grant support available to support the costs associated with effective grey squirrel control. Visit the Rural Payments and Services website for information.
