Gear up for Women's Festival of Cycling in the Woods

Women from across Edinburgh are invited to join Forestry Commission Scotland on a bike ride out of the city and through the surrounding woodlands as part of Cycling UK's Women's Festival of Cycling.

On Thursday (20th July), Forestry Commission Scotland is hosting a ‘Woodland Wheels’ day out for females looking to explore Scotland’s great outdoors. Riders will be cycling from SCOREscotland on Westburn Grove to Ratho community woods (8.8 miles) on an enjoyable bike ride for beginners.

The event, which is free to attend, is part of Forestry Commission Scotland’s Engagement programme, which encourages and supports a diverse range of minority groups to visit Scotland’s woodlands. Women who are new to the area are also encouraged to join the cycle so they can find out more about their new local forests and woodlands.

Romena Huq, engagement officer at Forestry Commission Scotland, said: “Women from across the city and its outskirts are being encouraged to join us for a cycle around Scotland’s great outdoors, explore the enchanted woodland and taste the wild plant delights. It’s a great opportunity to explore Edinburgh’s woodlands on a bike.

“Forestry Commission Scotland works together with local communities to organise events like these to encourage people from diverse backgrounds to spend time in their local woodlands. These events may also encourage participants to choose cycling for sustainable transport and active leisure in their daily lives beyond the programme. To do this, our rides focus on breaking down barriers to cycling - whether social, economic or simply lack of experience or confidence - and are fully supported by experienced ride leaders.”

The Women's Festival of Cycling aims to inspire more women to discover the thrill of riding bikes for themselves - whatever their age, fitness or ability. Throughout July 2017, Cycling UK will be celebrating women who cycle and helping those who need extra encouragement to take up cycling.

This woman-only event is free to attend, and a limited supply of bikes are provided by Forestry Commission Scotland free of charge but should be booked in advance.
