Fish and amphibians
Scotland is world famous for its fishing. For many people, that conjures up images of leaping salmon. However, as well as the ‘king of the river’, water creatures of all shapes and sizes can also be found on the National Forest Estate.
They include the elusive great crested newt and the rare freshwater pearl mussel, and others too tiny to see.
They all form part of an important aquatic ecosystem that affects the wellbeing of many plants, birds and animals – and humans too.
Today, as well as respecting this priority habitat, we’re taking direct conservation action for a number of key species.
