Tweed Valley Forest Park land management plan

Tweed Valley Forest Park comprises seven forests along the River Tweed, between Peebles and Selkirk (see location map):

  • Cademuir
  • Glentress
  • Cardrona
  • Caberston
  • Elibank & Traquair
  • Thornielee
  • Yair

Previous management plans for each of these forests were due to be reviewed and revised from 2017 onwards, so we are taking the opportunity to pull them together into one 'composite' land management plan (LMP). This reflects the importance of Tweed Valley Forest Park in terms of landscape, recreation and tourism, and the environment.

Covering a total area of 6,566 hectares, the LMP will include new woodland creation at West Bold (Elibank & Traquair). It will however exclude the recently approved LMP (approved 2016) for new woodland creation at Nether Horsburgh (Glentress). The land management plans may be merged in the future.

Community consultation

We would like to know what you think? Which areas do you visit, and what activities do you carry out? What do you like about the forests and what, if any, improvements or changes would you like to see?

We are planning five public consultation events, to which everyone is invited to drop in and share their thoughts on how they would like to see the forests managed in the future.  Each ‘drop-in’ session will run from 3pm – 7pm:

  • Wednesday 16th August: Cardrona Village Hall
  • Tuesday 29th August: Innerleithen Memorial Hall
  • Thursday 31st August: Peebles Burgh Hall
  • Tuesday 5th September: Walkerburn Public Hall
  • Monday 11th September: Caddonfoot Hall

If you are unable to make any of these public 'drop-in' events, you can get in touch with us using the contact details below.

Timeline

  • Summer/early autumn 2017:  Develop LMP Brief and initial public consultation (as per dates above).
  • Autumn/winter 2017/18:  Further scoping and stakeholder consultation.  Field survey work.
  • Spring/Summer 2018:  Develop draft LMP, including felling proposals and future tree species choice.  On-going consultation.
  • Autumn/winter 2018:  Firm up LMP proposals and final stakeholder consultation.
  • January 2019:  Submit LMP to Forestry Commission Scotland  (FCS) for approval.  At this point the LMP will be placed on the FCS Public Register for four weeks, during which time it is still available for comment.
