Take a romantic stroll

When it comes to lovely places to walk in the forest, we really are spoilt for choice in Scotland. No matter where you are in the country, there are beautiful paths waiting to be discovered – usually in under an hour’s drive.

Over in the west, Puck’s Glen and Loch Katrine have an undeniable je ne sais quoi. The former is rich for exploring with shady undergrowth and tumbling waterfalls, and the latter is steeped in a romantic history that inspired literary greats like Wordsworth and Scott.

Slightly further north, the trees of Glencoe Lochan tell a romantic tale. This forest, peppered with North American trees, was created by Lord Strathcona in a bid to ease his homesick Canadian wife, and today you can take the gentle trail around a tranquil lochan.

For those in the central belt, Carron Valley offers a taste of the Highlands on your doorstep, with lovely views and red squirrels darting about the place. Near Glasgow, the remote Kilpatrick Braes are a peaceful spot for a romantic wander, or south of Edinburgh you’ll find the small but perfectly formed Lord Ancrum’s Wood.

Why not extend your forest visit, with a stay at one of Forest Holidays luxury log cabins at Strathyre or Argyll? Don’t forget some bubbly to quaff in the outdoor hot tub too – it’s essential!

Beautiful places to propose

So you’ve decided to pop the question to the love of your life. All that remains is to find the perfect place to get down on one knee.

It may not come as a surprise to you that many of the folks who work here at Forestry Commission Scotland have got engaged in the forest. We’ve pulled together their recommendations for the best forests to propose in…

The crystal clear waters of Loch Morlich Beach are beautiful throughout the year, and particularly magical with the snow tipped Cairngorms as a backdrop. Elsewhere in Glenmore Forest Park, the Farleitter Crag trail at Uath Lochans takes you to a stunning viewpoint over the Spey valley and Glen Feshie hills.

Propose under the twinkling night sky – few places are more impressive to look at the stars, than Galloway Forest Park. If you’d rather propose during daylight hours, take a walk to the enchanting Grey Mare's Tail waterfall at Talnotry, where the tumbling waters and panoramic views are sure to set the mood.

You’ll be spoilt for choice with places to propose in West Argyll – under the shade of magical giant firs at Sutherland’s Grove, on the secret fairy bridge in Glen Creran or atop the Iron Age fort of Castle Dounie at Crinan.

For a location with real wow factor, head to Glen Affric. The Viewpoint trail at River Affric offers an unforgettable panorama of mountains and the Caledonian Forest.

Getting hitched

Thinking of planning a woodland wedding? What could be more romantic than taking your vows in the dappled light of the forest as trees gently sway around you. Weddings in the forest can be as simple or extravagant as you like. Get in touch with the local district office of your preferred forest for further information.

Remember to sort out the paper work too – you’ll need to get a licence to get married in the forest or you can find a company that organises everything for you, such as Marthrown of Mabie.

If you fancy getting married in a forest setting, with the added security of being able to escape the elements if necessary – consider having your nuptuals in Callendar House, a lovely 14th century mansion set in the grounds of Callendar Wood.

Whatever you get up to this Valentine’s Day, have lovely time!
